Listers,

For the past 5 days, we the British Automobile Touring Association of Nova Scotia, have had the privilege of hosting 28 participants from the CAAR-GB (Club of Ancient Automobiles and Rallies - Great Britian) who as of today, have set out on a tour that will take them from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Orlando, Florida during the next four weeks. They shipped their 14 cars from Holland and the UK to Halifax and picked them up last Sunday and are passing through New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario where they will cross into New York State at Niagara Falls. Other states they will be passing through are Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia to Florida.

The cars they are driving include a unique
1927 Morris Oxford (Bullhead) touring
1932 Essex Terraplane Special (touring)
1936 MGTA (Isle of Man)
1938 Buick 40 from Holland
1954 XK120 and XK140 DH Coupes
1951 Bentley MK6
1954 Bentley MK6
1959 Edsel Ranger Convertible
1968 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow
1970 Mercedes Benz 250 SL
1972 Triumph Stag
1971 Jaguar E Type V12

They are a wonderful group and I'm sure they would look forward to meeting other car enthusiasts and clubs along their route. The itinerary for their trip can be found at their web site:
        http://www.btinternet.com/~caargb

I also have a list of the motels/hotels they are booked into each night so if you are interested in meeting a great bunch of people and some neat cars, e-mail me.

Regards,
Bob

I checked out this web site, and while it does list the sequence of locations and hotels, it is not specific on dates. I'm estimating their arrival in Niagra Falls around September 30. I may like to join them there for a visit, and also maybe travel along with the convoy for a day or two. Can I get enough information to know where and when to find the group? And is it possible to get in touch with anyone in the group while they are on the road?

Barney,

They will be in Niagra Falls, NY for two days, Wed. Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st staying at the Best Western Inn on the River (716-283-7612) and the tour director is Nigel Woodyard. Tuesday night they will be at the Holiday Inn in East Oshawa, Ontario (905-576-5101). They are a great bunch, you will enjoy meeting them as we did. They travel at their own speed and so will trickle into the hotel at various times.

BTW, we had John and Gladys McNaughton with us for the first week in August on Prince Edward Island in their Morgan. Great couple! This is the third year that they have joined us.

Bob

Barney,

You're right about your guess on September 30. The tour will be in the Niagara area then. The organizer, Nigel Woodyard, has a mobile phone. You can reach him at: 416-434-0502. Please tell Nigel that Fred Kuzyk says "hi"! Sept 29: Arrives at the Oshawa Holiday Inn. Sept 30: Toronto to Niagara. Oct 1: Rest day in Niagara, staying at the Best Western Inn On The River, 7001 Buffalo Ave, Niagara Falls, NY. All are welcome to join the participants. Possible winery stop in Niagara area, at Chateau des Charmes Wines, St. Davids, ON.

Have we met? Your name sounds familiar but it might be from reading mail, .... I'm 12 miles from the brink of the Falls upstream on the river. I was hoping to visit with them sometime during the two days they are here. I will use either my Cord or '47 Rolls. Be nice to make or refresh our aquaintance. Ric.

Nory,

I can post the dates they are in each city but they are taking mostly side roads and staying off the thruways and Interstates. The whole route book Nigel has prepared is about 100 sheets in a 4 ring binder so it would be difficult to post this to the various lists. They are all travelling at their own speeds and free to take any diversions along the planned route but meet up each night at the designated hotel where it would be best to meet them and view the great cars.

Sept. 29th - Holiday Inn, Bloor St., East Oshawa, Ontario
Sept. 30th/Oct. 1st (2 nights) - Best Western Inn on the River, Niagara Falls, NY
Oct. 2nd - Comfort Inn Suites, Vernon, NY
>....

Unfortunately, there has already been a major breakdown of the 1954 XK120 and it has been trucked back to Halifax for repairs by an extremely competant repair shop and will be shipped to Antwerp upon completion. The Belgian owners have rented a vehicle to complete the run. A very disappointing experience for them but they are still in high spirits.

If you would like more information on this tour, please e-mail me.

Bob

Hey Barney, are you still planning to hook up with them in Niagara Falls? I'm hoping I might be able to get there myself .... Those are cars we sure don't see around western New York too often (ever!) and I'd like to take some pictures. Maybe I'll see you there!

Yo, NORY?

Nothing important on the schedule to interfere, just checking wallet for moths and air holes. And still trying to find out if the Eastern NY MGA Club has anything happening next weekend. OTOH, a personal invite is a very good reason to travel anywhere, so what the hey? You got any ideas for lodging on the 30th? I know there's a nice campground on the US side of the falls, pretty close by, stayed there before, and no reservations needed.

Letchano soon,
Barney

Just about committed here (and well I should be). It's just a day trip from Chicago if I start early.

Okay all, send the white coats, I'm committed.

Two tanks of gas and about nine hours driving (a bit more than 500 miles), and I expect to be in Niagra Falls by mid afternoon on the 30th. I'm planning on booking into the campground just south of the falls when I get there, or maby just go hang out at the Best Western and pester everyone I can find. Get ready to break out the ale, 'cause I'm thirsty already.

Cheers,

Hi there! I guess we have not met in person. I live along the Niagara River... [snip]. Depending on the weather I will be hovering near the Falls in my '36 Cord s/c phaeton, or my very tired '47 Silver Wraith. I'll be looking for you. I look like the mad professor in "Back to the Future", or Ben Franklin on your $100 bill. .... If I remember I'll turn on my cell phone too .... Somehow we have to make your trip up here worthwhile. Are you travelling alone? How many are you? Ric.

Me too! .... but I'll be there. I'm even dragging a friend along. Might not bring an LBC though. The '74 is off the road, and the 5-speed doesn't have a heater, so it depends on the weather. Rain or excessive cold will necessitate bringing the truck (wimpy friend is afraid of freezing to death in an LBC). ....

HEATER? I suppose that would mean someone was even considering putting the top up? That's almost sacrilige.

So leave the friend home? Ya gotta get your priorities right.

I think I'll take you up on that offer. It could certainly save some time pitching a tent .... I expect to hit the road early and get there in mid afternoon, but could just as well find lunch and hang out at the hotel for a while.

I figure on going through Detroit/Windsor on the way up. It's almost a straight shot from Gary to Niagra, and somewhat farther from here to hook around the south side of Lake Erie. And I haven't been in that part of Canada since 1989. Looking forward to taking a lot of short-cuts and back roads from Windsor to Niagra this time. It may be a little more travel time, but should be fun. Don't expect a clean car when you see me. And if I tank it up in Detroit I don't think I'll need to stop for gas in Canada. ....

Actually, I'm more worried about driving in the rain without defrosters - makes it really hard to see, and the I-190 is not a good place to have that problem. If there's no rain, the '71 will be coming, tho' I think it may be a little embarrassed in the company of those old Bentleys.....

WHAT? It's only rain, for crying out loud!

>Actually, I'm more worried about driving in the rain without defrosters ....

I keep an extra windscreen wiper blade sitting on the door sill beside the seat just for that purpose. Works like a charm.

Don't worry. They'll appreciate the sentiment regardless. At least it's still chrome bumpers.

>Dusting off my list hat....

No list hat here, but I'll be wearing an MGA t-shirt or jacket of some sort. Don't be surprised if it says "Eastern New York MGA Club" or "North Carolina MGA Register" or such. I collect them but I never buy them, kind of like the grafitti artists required to steal the paint.
