If you were an overseas customer you could buy the car, pick it up in the UK and not pay the UK purchase tax which was considerable, like 30%+. You could then license the car in the UK and drive it for one year. If the car was not exported within 1 year then the purchase tax was immediately due. Great for overseas folks planning to see UK and Europe on vacation in their new car and then ship it home.
