Here you see the bottom side of the fabric after only the top half of the fastener is in place. Notice that there is a small semi-circular tab in the center of the fastener. This tab seats against the side of the mounting stud when the assembly is installed on the car. It is important that this tab extends through the hole and is not trapped on top of the fabric. Also you can see in this picture (and in the preceding picture) the small spring wire inside of the fastener. From this you can understand why it's important to cut the hole in the fabric before the fastener is installed. It would be pretty hard to trim the fabric back afterwards.
