Delayed Brake Lights on the MGA - Finally a Fix!

MGA owners have been dealing with poorly functioning hydraulic brake switches for years. With a mechanical switch replacing the hydraulic switch, the brake lights would be able to provide advance warning, to the driver behind, of the intention to slow and\or to stop without the delay associated with a hydraulic brake pressure switch.

Would it be possible to create a kit to upgrade brake light performance for the MGA community? The design would have to ensure absolute reliability, make no permanent modifications to the existing wiring, locate discretely, be completely reversible, be adaptable to all models of the MGA and be relatively easy to install. Meeting these criteria required repeated trips to the fabricators and contacts with suppliers.

A switch support bracket was designed. A suitable brake light switch from the over 430 available was selected. A wire harness with the proper connectors was then developed. Finally, a prototype kit which met the design criteria was installed and tested in my car. Now the brake lights would come on with just a light touch of the brake pedal -- every time!

How practical is this kit to upgrade the brake light performance for MGA owners? The key questions were, how much effort would it be to install, how long would installation take without assistance, how visually apparent would the installation be to spectators and judges and most importantly, how much pedal pressure and movement was needed as compared to before the installation of the new brake switch kit?

A test subject, with his gorgeous MGA MK2, was given a kit and the instruction sheet along with the specified tools to do the installation. Fifty minutes and a few MGA stories later, the owner saw that with a touch of the pedal, the brake lights would signal an intention to slow or stop the car. He said, "Now all I have to do is tap the brake pedal and the brake lights come on".

MGA owners can obtain this mechanical brake light switch kit that is easily installed and greatly improves reliability while providing a modern level of brake light performance. Each kit comes complete with the bracket, the switch, a custom harness with soldered tips, new connectors and illustrated instructions. Installation requires only simple tools -- no cutting, drilling or splicing!

When ordering a kit, specify whether your existing brake pressure switch has wire connections that attach with screw terminals or with push-on spade-type connectors.

There is beauty in simplicity!
